Hang Ten with Maili Masters for Charity

The Maili Masters longboard surfing competition is once again rolling into Rainbow Bay from December 5-6, to celebrate the good old days of surfing and help raise money for Kids with Cancer.

Aimed at mature-aged Malibu board surfers, the Maili Masters will feature a round-robin format, allowing each surfer three surfs, depending on conditions. Age groups will start at over 45's and increase in five year increments, finishing up with an over 65's division.

For the first time, the Maili Masters will feature a Wahine division with women over 40 given the opportunity to get out there and compete against like-minded surfers.

Event organiser Sean McKeown from Island Style Promotions said the event offered the perfect opportunity for longboard surfers to take part in a friendly competition and take a trip down memory lane while demonstrating their skills in a friendly competition.

"The Maili Masters Longboard Rally is a great occasion for local surfers and surfers from interstate and overseas to come together and celebrate their love of longboarding," he said.

"We've had a lot of interest in the event, with an entrant from as far south as Victoria and interest from our neighbours in New Zealand also, so we are expecting a good turnout for the competition,"

"There are very few round-robin competitions like this which guarantee every competitor at least three surfs - the Maili Masters is less about the competition and more about having a great time and reminiscing about the good old days,"

"It will be a great day out for surfers and spectators alike. This year, we are looking forward to welcoming the Wahine division to the competition, we expect the women's division will help keep the men's stories pure," said Mr McKeown.

To help raise funds for the Kids with Cancer foundation, the Table of Knowledge Boardriders Club will be raffling off a handcrafted, longboard.

"It's a great foundation, and we are very pleased to be able to help raise some much needed funds for the Kids with Cancer charity," said Mr McKeown.

As part of the competition a social night will be held on Saturday 5 December at the Rainbow Bay SLSC with $10 meals and live music and a chance for competitors to discuss the day's events.

The major sponsor of the Maili Masters is Nu Developments, the developer of the 'Maili' residential development at Tweed Heads. The name behind the $20 million development is local surfing landmark 'Maili Rocks', the formation of rocks located near Snapper Rocks.

"We really want the Maili development to tie in with the local surfing culture, and the Maili Masters is the perfect opportunity for us to get involved in the local surfing community," said Mr Paddison.

"Last year's event was great fun and we look forward to bringing the Maili Masters back to Rainbow Bay again this year," he said.

Maili is a 1425 square metre residential development comprising four exclusive townhouses with their own plunge pools, five luxury one-per-floor sky homes and two multi-level premier penthouses in a 10-storey tower.

"Maili will set a new benchmark in luxury apartment living in Coolangatta. Rather than the usual 25, two-bedroom apartments, we will provide purchasers with quality, spacious residences ranging in size from 240.5 to 466 square metres," said Mr Paddison.

Mr Paddison said Maili's prime beach-side setting will lure buyers seeking uninterrupted ocean views from expansive balconies stretching approximately 20 metres in length.

Other sponsors of the Maili Masters include Rip Curl, Snowscene, Golden Breed, Ransom, Barz optics, Neways Healthy Homes, Island Style Promotions, Table of Knowledge Boardriders Club, Old Guys Rule, XXXX Summer Light Lager, Suncorp and Hyundai.

Entry fees are $55 per division entered and close on December 1. Limited spaces are available so get in quick, for more information visit www.theislandstyle.com.au or call Sean McKeown on 0414 569 208.
