Sail the Whitsundays in winter and you may spot humpback whales as they migrate north to calve and breed in the warm, sheltered Whitsunday waters. These majestic, 40,000kg gentle giants pass through the Whitsundays between July and September on their journey from Antarctica. Best spots to whale-watch include the bays and inlets of the northern islands, particularly around Hayman Island's Blue Pearl and Butterfly Bays. Sightings at this time are almost a daily occurrence within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park area.
