In May of 2007, the fledgling Puma Ocean Racing hosted a nice-but-modest press conference at Boston's Rowse Wharf to announce their intention to race in the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race. The newly minted team, headed by skipper Ken Read, was optimistic but realistic about their odds, and their game-plan strategy of hitting a series of 'singles' (as Read, a Red Sox fanatic, loves to say), rather than swinging hard in the hopes of it proving to be a home run.
