While the ocean racing yachts have been sailing into Hobart from Melbourne, Sydney and Launceston over the past week, nearly 40 Tasmanian dinghy sailors have been sailing in New South Wales and South Australian waters, and as far afield as Argentina, competing with success in Australian and World sailing championships.

Over the weekend, Tasmanians won in two national sailing titles, with Nick Richardson and Mark Padgett from Wynyard taking out the B14 adult high-performance skiff class at Belmont, New South Wales, finishing the regatta with two wins.

At Largs Bay in Adelaide, Hobart teenagers Lucy Shephard and Amelia Catt from Hobart won the women's title at the 420 class championships, also placing a most credible sixth overall in the open championship that included a number of international competitors.

Also in Adelaide, George Jones from Hobart placed fourth in the Laser Radial national championship and second youth competitor against a fleet of 48 leading Australian and international sailors in this single-handed class.

In Argentina, five young Tasmanians from Hobart are competing in the International Cadet world championships with brother and sister Alec and Samantha Bailey leading the regatta after eight races. Over the weekend, a win and a second place lifted the Baileys from seventh overall to first in standings, ahead of crews from Argentina, Great Britain and Belgium.

The International Cadet sailors are members of the Sandy Bay Sailing Club, while most of the Laser and 420 class sailors are members of the Derwent Sailing Squadron/Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania Dinghy Group, all sailing regularly on Hobart's River Derwent.
