'Olympic Flame in Hudson, Quebec'
.
|
The Olympic Torch returns to the West Island today, winding its way through the streets of Dollard des Ormeaux, Kirkland, Pointe Claire and Dorval before heading east to end-of-day celebrations in Old Montreal.
Earlier in Hudson, seven-time Olympian Evert Bastet carried the torch 300 metres. The Hudson resident said being asked to carry the torch holds special meaning for the medal winner and member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
'Overwhelming, simply overwhelming,' he said after carrying the torch down Main Road as hundreds of residents, including his friends and family as well as the Westwood High School band and lots of boisterous students, loudly cheered him on.
'I took part in many Olympics but this is the closest I've been to the flame itself,' said Bastet, who as part of the Canadian Olympic sailing team won a silver medal in the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. He also took part in the 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1988 and 1992 Games.
The torch returns to the West Island today, beginning in Dollard des Ormeaux, where torch bearers will carry the flame along Sources Blvd., from Brunswick to de Salaberry Blvd. and on Hotel de Ville, where it is expected at town hall at 12:31 p.m.
