NSW Maritime, the state's boating safety regulator, has signed on as partner in safety with Sail Port Stephens 2010 on the Mid-North Coast this week.
The seven-day sailing event, now in its third year and growing rapidly in popularity, runs from Monday 12 April until Sunday 18 April.
NSW Maritime Hunter Inland Regional Manager Charlie Dunkley said, "NSW Maritime is working with the event organisers to provide the competitors, their supporters and spectators with as safe, fair and enjoyable experiences as possible."
The racing is on the waters of the Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park, a 98,000 hectare marine reserve which is the largest in NSW.
"More than 80 yachts have entered the regatta and while there is plenty of room for everyone on the waters of Port Stephens, the normal Collision Regulations and boating safety guidelines will apply throughout the week, and NSW Maritime asks non-competing skippers for care, courtesy and common sense," said Dunkley.
"This includes keeping a proper lookout at all times and staying clear of the action to avoid jeopardising the racing outcomes and safety of competitors and spectators alike."
Sail Port Stephens is organised by the Corlette Point Sailing Club in partnership with Events Port Stephens, an initiative of Port Stephens Council. The series includes a wide range of divisions, from cruising through to the more serious one-design and IRC classes, as well as a family-friendly social program.
"NSW Maritime Boating Safety Officers (BSOs) will be on hand at the event headquarters at d'Albora Marina in Nelson Bay during the week to provide competitors and the general public with information and advice about safe boating on this beautiful waterway," Dunkley said.
"The BSOs will have a broad range of publications including Boating Handbooks, tide tables and boating maps, as well as giveaways and prizes including children's activity packs and lifejackets.
"They will also be conducting fun activities promoting boating safety awareness for kids, including a lifejacket relay before racing on the morning of Wednesday 14 April."
