The Rolex Trophy Rating Series opened in dramatic fashion with progressive IRC Division 1 leader, Alan Brierty's Reichel Pugh 62 Limit, cutting away one spinnaker and tearing another, with Rolex Trophy and Rolex Sydney Hobart handicap favourites Living Doll and Loki pulling out of race two.
Stephen Ainsworth's RP63 Loki has this afternoon gone to Sydney City Marine to undergo repairs to its shaft drive system. They may not race in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia organised series tomorrow.
Michael Hiatt's Victorian Farr 55 Living Doll had a messy situation with their spinnaker in the second race and by the time they got it sorted, it was too late to rejoin the fleet. On the dock this afternoon Hiatt made the point that he is delighted with his boat speed.
In Race 1, Limit, helmed by Victorian yachtsman Barney Walker, beat Loki and Living Doll and in Race 2, Rob Hanna's Victorian JV52 Shogun took the honours from Geoff Ross' RP55 Yendys and Limit.
In Division 2, Paul Clitheroe's Beneteau 45 Balance took out the first race and Guy Stening's Farr 30 Optimum claimed the race two win, picking up pace as the wind increased. Peter Sorensen's The Philosopher's Club is leading Division 2 pointscore.
The breeze on Manly Circle averaged 15-20 knots with gusts up to 25 out of the north nor'east combining with lumpy seas to produce plenty of thrills and spills.
