Four times race winner, Wild Oats XI (Mike Richards) is making a late charge in the Rolex Sydney Hobart race to pick up here fifth successive line honours win in the 605nm classic.
Over the past four hours Wild Oats has picked up a strong breeze and is sailing and incredible three knots faster than race leader Alfa Romeo (Neville Crichton).
In doing so, Wild Oats has moved past ICAP Leopard (Mike Slade) and is rolling up nicely on the New Zealand yacht.
In turn the three supermaxis have jumped the rest of the fleet and Alfa Romeo is now 90nm ahead of the former Maximus - Greg Elliott designed supermaxi skippered in this race by Sean Langman.
It is believed that the breeze is playing a fickle game in the final third of the offshore classic, as boats speeds range from ICAP Leopard sailing at just over 5kts, while Alfa Romeo is sailing at 11kts and Wild Oats 13kts.
