A dockside strawpoll with a few of the race's most experienced navigators and tacticians before the Boxing Day start suggested that those who ground out the worst of the two southerly fronts in the first 36 hours of the race would face a very different challenge on Day 3. Sure enough the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday shows a complicated scenario off Tasmania's east coast with a high moving much lighter winds around the compass from west through south and into the north.
