Defending champion club, the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, has comfortably retained the Association Cup, the annual end-of-season interclub contest between five of Melbourne's major yacht clubs.

While sailing conditions were excellent on Saturday, strong winds gusting to 30 knots made sailing and winning tough for all 54 boats contesting the four races in four divisions - IRC A and B and AMS A and B.

Yachts from the Williamstown-based club topping the individual scores in three divisions - Michael Hiatt's Living Doll the most successful boat in IRC A division with a 2-3-2-1 scorecard, Surprise (David Ellis) heading IRC B with three wins and a second, and Footloose (John Robb) scoring two firsts, a second and a fifth in AMS B.

IRC B division went to Royal Brighton Yacht Club's Just a Minor Hickup, skippered by Peter Coleman with three firsts and a fourth.

With scores based on the two best scoring boats from each club in each division, the end result was the RYCV finishing on 13 points, Sandringham Yacht Club on 25 points, Royal Brighton Yacht Club 34 points and Hobson's Bay Yacht Club on 55 points.

The RYCV's winning team comprised Living Doll, Executive Decision and Apache in IRC A, Surprise, Top Gun and Godzilla in IRC B, Wake, Swordfish Trombone and Chutzpah in AMS A, and Footloose, Serious Yahoo and Nouannie in AMS B division.

Race winners over the weekend including Living Doll, Executive Decision, Scarlett Runner and Ikon in IRC A, Surprise (3) and Top Gun in IRC B, Just a Minor Hick-Up (3) and Silk in AMS A, and Footloose (2), Serious Yahoo and Wavelength in AMS B.
