Just one second separated the yachts Redback and Archie as they crossed the finish line of today's Cygnet Regatta race, in what locals described as the closest contest in the recent history of the regatta, first held 146 years ago.
Redback, Ambrose Coad's Kaufman 40, from the Port Cygnet Sailing Club, slipped the bow of her red hull across the finish line less than half a metre ahead of Archie, Sally Rattle's Archambault 35 from the Derwent Sailing Squadron. The official margin, after an almost two hour duel around the course, was just one second, with both crews cheering each other after they crossed the line.
Only 49 seconds astern came another local entrant, Scott Shaw's Mumm 35 Cleopatra from the Huon Yacht Club.
Sailed over a spectator friendly course around the bays and headlands of historic Port Cygnet, first settled in 1834, the regatta attracted 56 starters on a hot and sunny autumn day, tempered by a 12-15 knot breeze.
The regatta began on Friday evening with a passage race from Hobart to Kettering followed by a further 20 nautical mile race on Saturday down the d'Entrecasteaux Channel from Kettering to Port Cygnet.
The Overall winner of the 2010 Cygnet Regatta, announced at the prizegiving at the Port Cygnet Sailing Club this evening, was Rosella, Andrew Matton-Johnson's Contessa 25 from Austins Ferry Yacht Club, which also finished second in the Hobart to Kettering Race and won Division 2 of the Kettering to Cygnet Race.
Winner of the Hobart to Kettering Race on corrected time was the Sonata 7 trailable yacht Bosun, giving owners Bill and Anne Bower, from Thirroul, NSW, a fitting end to a cruising and racing holiday in Tasmania.

After towing Bosun behind their 4WD across Bass Strait in the ferry, they have cruised the waters of the Tamar River, Macquarie Harbour and Lake Pedder, as well as competing in the Crown Series Bellerive Regatta and the
Cygnet Regatta.
Red Jacket took line honours in Saturday's Kettering to Port Cygnet race, but the 40-footer could not hold her time on handicap, with Division 1 going to What a Life (David Allen) from Wings Three (Peter Haros) and Close
Encounters (Damien Killalea). Andrew Matton-Johnson's Rosella won Division 2 from Chinook (Richard Boyer) and Wyvern (Stan Kay).
Today, in the Cygnet Regatta Race around Port Cygnet, Division 1 went to the Bellerive Yacht Club's Wings Three, Peter Haros' Northshore 38, from Cio Cio San, Peter Gautschi's J24 from Port Cygnet Sailing Club and What a Life,
David Allan's Masrm 720.
In Division 2, first place went to the cruising yacht from Kettering Yacht Club, Chinook (Richard Moyer), second going to the Top Hat, Wyvern (Stan Kay) from Port Cygnet Sailing Club, and third to Meander, an Albatross design skippered by Roger Aldridge from Kettering Yacht Club.
