Light winds and extreme temperatures have dictated play on day two of the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship at Largs Bay Sailing Club in South Australia.

As Adelaide entered day two of a heat wave with temperatures creeping towards 40 degrees the sailors hit the water for a 10am start in light, shifty conditions. After a number of aborted races it was decided to send the fleets back to shore for some reprieve from the sun and to wait for more wind.

Shortly after lunch the crews headed back out with a steady breeze of around eight knots allowing the Techno 293s to complete three races with the other classes completing two races each.

Byron White and Thomas Koerner have taken the lead in the 29er class after two race wins on day two, though the overall class win is certain to go right down to the wire. James Sly and Andrew Gillies are in second, just a point behind White and Koerner with Declan Reilly and Ashlen Rooklyn one point further back in third.

'It was light and shifty out there today, the left was certainly paying,' said Reilly. 'There's still plenty of racing left and tomorrow we'll try and get some good starts and put in some consistent races.'

Victorians Chase Lurati and Paul Darmanin have a two point lead over Andrew Gough and Jackson Grant in the Hobie 16 class with each crew recording a win and a second today.

'We had a pretty good day today but it was a long one after heading out this morning and not getting any races in,' said Darmanin. 'While we were back on shore we just checked our settings and kept hydrated, it was incredibly hot out there.'

'Tomorrow we'll just keep on doing our own thing and sail our race, not anyone else's,' he said.

New Caledonia's Antoine Aubert continues to lead the Techno 293 fleet, recording a first and fifth placing on day two to sit on nine points, just one ahead of Western Australia's Eamon Robertshaw. Robertshaw had a consistent day, finishing with a second and a third to be seven points clear of third placed Reece Baillie from Queensland.

2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Sailing Team member Joanna Sterling is the top placed girl and currently sixth overall.

In the Laser 4.7 class Mark Spearman is in first after a third and ninth left him five points clear of Lloyd Collings with Singapore's Terence Choo two points further back in third. Isabella Say is the first girl in tenth overall with New Zealander Phillippa Wood second.

Malaysian sailor Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy finished day two with a first and second placing to leave him 16 points clear of Christopher Jones and Ben Franklin. Alex South is the first places girl, ahead of Martina Ciotti and Ashley Stoddart.

Singaporean sailors fill the podium in the 420 class with Chuan Ko and Andrew Chan leading, ahead of Rachel Lee and Benita Chua with Luke Tan and Clement Lim third. Ko and Chan picked up two race wins to have a five point lead over their compatriots.

Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough are the leading Australian crew in fourth place with Queenslanders Elloise Brake and Ashley Warlow the first Australian girls pairing.

Racing continues at Largs Bay Sailing Club on Saturday with the 2010 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship finishing on Sunday 10 January.
