Northside Sailing School ran six camps over the recent Christmas break, seeing 243 students between the ages of 6 and 16 hit the water in Sydney's Middle Harbour.
Of these there were 109 kids sailing for their first time, the other 134 coming back for more sailing after participating in past activities.
The camps have been running for over 15 years every school holidays, they follow a tried and tested format that is being continually updated and improved. Northside has an aim to introduce as many kids to the sport of sailing as possible, and through its own certificate system, running in conjunction with the GISBS (Yachting Australia) Scheme, take them up to a level where they can confidently sail in a variety of conditions or join a club and get into racing.
The sailing school has close links to the Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff and Yacht clubs, with students moving up to their club programs and in turn club sailors finding work teaching sailing in the camps. It also sponsors a 13ft Skiff sailing out of Middle Harbour, the current State and National Champions Scott Cotton and Rob Size on the aptly named 'Northside Sailing School.'
Northside will be running weekend activities during the school term before the next two camps in the April holidays. Bookings can be made via the website
