The Livingston Trophy - A Le Mans Rally on Port Phillip on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October 2009.
The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria introduces an expanded format for the 2009 event.
Unlike most races with the Livingston, there is no fixed course. Competitors maximise distance sailed on a course which they design (prior and/or during the race) from a selection of optional marks and course legs spread around Port Phillip. The winner will need to predict and adjust to the weather and then design and change it's course to best suit their boat under the conditions at hand and expected. All this whilst ensuring that they sail each leg no more than twice and are able to finish on time at the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria at 5pm on Saturday afternoon.
. Sail your own course from optional legs
. Most miles on handicap wins
. Two duration options:
. 22 hours (start Friday 7pm) - CAT 5N+
. 7 hours (start Saturday 10am) - CAT 5+
. Mass finish at RYCV
The Livingston Trophy should have an appeal with a number of different categories of sailors:
. Competitive Bay Racers
Don't need to follow the leader. Wake up your tactical and navigation skills.
. Competitive Ocean Racers
Prepare your crew for the major ocean races.
. One Designs
Something different than windward leeward.
. Ocean Cruisers
Use the event to prepare your boat and crew for a longer ocean cruise
. New Ocean Racers
Get used to many aspects of ocean racing such as running watches and night sailing, with the advantage of a sheltered area, close to home.
. Bay Cruisers and Classics
With the majority of legs sailed on a reach or run, the event is relatively comfortable, so set a challenge to yourself and your crew and finish the 22 hours.
The event is a true test of navigation and planning skills.
