The venue for the first PSA Laser Clinic was Dobroyd Acquatic Centre is based on Sydney Harbour, west of the City. Twelve keen Laser sailors signed up for a full day of coaching on Sunday 7 March and it was twelve far more knowledgeable sailors who left full of enthusiasm at the end of a fantastic day of sailing and theory.
The conditions were challenging with gusts of 30 knots blasting down the harbour to the shallow waters leading to most of the fleet sporting a fabulous 'choc top', mud coated sail tip. There were a couple of boats needing a nudge by the coach boat to dig them out after spearing the bottom in spectacular style while trying to take on the gybes in the drill.
There were four standard rig sailors, three ladies, a youth, several seniors and many masters within the group all of mixed ability. Everyone actively participated asking lots of questions with everyone gaining greatly from the experience.
Bronwyn Mitchell said of the clinic, 'It was brilliant; Laura and Ashley did a smashing job. I got heaps out of the day and really appreciated the positive approach to our training and the encouragement on the water.
'I wish I had had this input years ago as I have spent all this time not even knowing how to de-power the rig properly. Now that I know, I am beating the boys and that is an awesome feeling!'
Australian Women's Laser Radial Champion and PSA coach, Laura Baldwin commented, 'I was immensely pleased with how well Ashley Brunning and myself worked together to deliver a professional, informative and enjoyable day for all.
'With it being our first clinic I thought it might be more of a trial run but it went really well even with the tough conditions we managed two on water sessions, lots of theory and Ash did a demonstration beside the club which impressed the sailors greatly. We will be back again at the beginning of next season'.
