The 2010 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship is underway, with day one of racing complete at Largs Bay Sailing Club in Adelaide.
After a short delay due to a lack of wind the 165 boats hit the water, with all six classes completing four races each in a constant breeze between eight and 14 knots, as the temperate reached 36 degrees. Due to the extreme temperatures forecast for the next three days in Adelaide it was decided to conduct an opening race on day while conditions were ideal.
The temperature soared both on and off the water with sailors competing for places in the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Sailing Team to contest the 2010 Volvo ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship and also for a chance to compete at the first Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Singapore later in the year.
In the Techno 293 class New Caledonian sailor Antoine Aubert leads the way after winning two of the opening four races. Aubert has a two point lead over West Australian Eamon Robertshaw who took victory in the final race with New South Welshman Ashely Heyworth third. Joanna Sterling is the first girl and is fourth overall, tied on 19 points with Heyworth and Reece Baillie.
Declan Reilly and Ashlen Rooklyn have had a great opening day in the 29er class, finishing the day with two wins and two third places. The New South Wales pair has an eight point lead over Byron White and Thomas Koerner and Victorians James Sly and Andrew Gillies. Tess Lloyd and Rebecca Tuma are the leading girls crew and took victory in the opening race of the regatta.
West Australian Mark Spearman is first in the Laser 4.7 class after four races, with his consistent day leaving him on nine points, seven ahead of Lloyd Collings and Singaporean Terence Choo. The three sailors, along with fourth placed Stephen Collings, each won a race on the opening day.
In the Hobie 16 class Chase Lurati and Paul Darmanin won three of the opening four races to finish the day with a six point lead over Queenslanders Andrew Gough and Jackson Grant and Alex Landwehr and Jason Dobson.
Singaporean sailors are leading the way in the 420 class, with Luke Tan and Clement Lim in first place on 17 points, one point ahead of compatriots Rachel Lee and Benita Chua. New Zealanders Sam Mackay and Emma Goodwin are third, a further two points back. The next three crews are all from Singapore, with Queenslanders Elloise Brake and Ashley Warlow the leading Australian crew in seventh.
The international theme continues in the Laser Radial class with Malaysian Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy leading on 14 points after four races, seven ahead of West Australian Matthew Wearn with Tasmanian Christopher Jones third. Jones took victory in the opening two races and is three points behind Wearn.
Racing continues on Friday January 8 and concludes on Sunday January 10.
