Geographe Bay's notorious 'noon lull' arrived early today, during the second of three race scheduled on the windward and return course. The third race was therefore abandoned and some Division 3 yachts failed to make the time limit.
Worst affected in IRC Division 3 was Ian Holder's highly credentialled Whiting 32, which was very well placed on the points table, but was one of the smaller boats that failed to beat the time limit. The cancellation of the third race makes Bad Habits' position even more precarious, for under regatta rules, she now has only one race to drop, but if the remainder of the program cannot be completed, she will have to carry the DNF which will virtually destroy her regatta. Given her crew's plucky performance in the regatta to date, that would be a most unfortunate outcome.
Mike Finn's S&S 34 Constellation is another in the same boat.
Two Viper 640's competed in the sportsboat division, each winning one heat, while the Thompson 7.5 InSite Racing took line honours in both despite the best efforts of the chasing pack.
John Moore's Charlotte finally had a break-through line honours win over sister ship Optimus Prime in the second race today. The crew had minimal preparation for the regatta following a lengthy lay-off due to delays in repairs to her keel and has been steadily improving, but with another two wins today, Dave Walling and Vern Williamson's The Next Factor, skippered by Paul Eldrid with Kiwi Simon Minoprio calling tactics, have almost sealed the IRC result with two days to go.
