The Charente-Maritim/Bahia Transat 6.50, the 17th edition of the event, has been won by the Portuguese sailor Francisco Lobato (ROFF TMN). He crossed the finish line in the Bahian night, at 8h 10 min and 15 sec. (French Time). Yesterday Charlie Dalin took the second leg victory, however Lobato wins Overall for the Series thanks to the 22 hours time advantage he held from the previous leg win.

There were 14 nationalities and 33 non-French contesting this edition of The Charente-Maritime/Bahia Transat 6,50.
South African Mat Trauttman and his plan Magnen 'Mini Mac', who been had been in the leading pack before the Doldrums, is the first non-French sailor to finish.

Lobato's finish

The Portuguese Francisco Lobato (ROFF TMN) lit flares that illuminated the night just a few seconds after greeting the finish line. The Production Series winner was happy and relieved, and was cheered by his friends gathered on the dock of the marina's yacht club. 'It's done!' he exclaimed. And he honoured his predecessor, Charlie Dalin who arrived first and before him yesterday afternoon. Dalin's time was not fast enough to bridge the gap of 22 hours that Lobato had from the first leg.

The race director learned that Ricardo Apolloni's boat (Ma Vie pour Mapei) was stranded on a beach, 60 km to the north of Salvador de Bahia. Procedures immediately went into place and a vessel was sent to the area.

Ricardo Apolloni and Ma vIe pour were grounded on the beach of Guarajupe, 60 km from Salvador de Bahia. The boat was moved to a mooring by local fishermen after she suffered two broken rudders. A new rudder and fittings - kindly given by Francisco Lobato - has arrived so that Apolloni can attempt a repair to get back at sea and reach Salvador.

The Italian Andrea Caracci arrived in Bahia at sunrise. He finished the leg 15th in the Protos category in 20 days, 18 hours, 38 minutes and 45 seconds (average speed 6.28 kts). His overall race time is 28 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 22 seconds and finishes 13th in this Charente-Maritime/Bahia Transat 6.50.

Just after he moored his plan Manuard 'Speedy Maltese', Andrea immediately went to hospital to have an inflammation of the left eye treated.

Upon arrival an excited third placed Xavier Macaire exclaimed 'I'm in the place I wanted to be! What a happiness for me!' Greeted by his 'buddies' and under the pouring rain of a tropical storm, Xavier was slow to realize the significance of the moment, 'Of course I did not know about the misfortunes of Ricardo (Apolloni, groundred last night 60 kms from Bahia) and that I was third! I really fought in the Doldrums where I zigzagged without really knowing what I was doing before the rush straight ahead and then the reaching forward to Fernando da Noronha. It was long.'

Xavier's second leg was 20 days, 19 hours, 20 minutes and 16 seconds long. His overall time is 27 days, 21 hours, 8 minutes and 14 sec.

October 24th update: Sebastien Rogues (Eole Generation GDF Suez) crossed the finish line and the German sailor Daniela Klein (Jolly Roger) is expected before midnight. 23 solo sailors are expected the finish this day.
