Mat Belcher won a Gold medal in 2000. It wasn't an Olympic Gold Medal, however it was enough to get him to the Olympics. By winning the 420 World Championship Belcher impressed Australia's Olympic Committee so much that the young athlete carried the Olympic flag during the Closing Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. 'It gave me a taste for the Olympics and it was the first time that I met Victor (Kovalenko),' said 27-year old Mathew Belcher, who, following four World Cup events this year is the top 470 skipper. Mat met Australia's 470 coach during Sydney 2000.
