Where the opening day of the BMW Auckland Regatta had winds gusting over 30 knots and one trimaran cartwheeling out of control, the second day was more about tactics than survival as the wind softened to near drifting strength at times and seldom reached double figures.
The change of conditions, however, did not produce much change in the leaderboard of most divisions at the end of Race Day Two, suggesting that the cream will rise regardless of the circumstances.
The most consistent performance in the regatta across all divisions so far has come from Brian Trubovich's Ross 10.66 Higher Ground in Division B and Phil Douglas's Farr 1020 Azure in Division C. Both their scorecards after eight races included five first place finishes and two seconds with their worst scores discarded.
'We put a lot of preparation into this regatta,' said Trubovich. 'We did not do the Bayof Islandsregatta this year, principally because I wanted to make sure that for the BMW Auckland Regatta everything was in top order and we were at full strength.'
After the completion of eight races, the leaders in the various divisions are as follows (based on provisional results in PHRF for Divisions A-E and General Handicap for the multihulls and Young 88s):
A Div: Power Play (Ian McBurney)B Div: Higher Ground (Brian Trubovich)C Div: Azure (Phil Douglas)D Div: Cool Change (Gary Kirkland-Smith)E Div: Tiago Iti (Craig Anderson)Open multihull: Taeping (Dave Andrews)8.5m multihull: Creepy Crawler (Ryan Taylor)Y88: Dangerzone (Grant Turnbull)
