The Lancelin Ocean Classic will be awarding the first Peter Volwater Perpetual Award, in memory of the late Peter Volwater - friend to many of the Lancelin Ocean Classic competitors and world-renowned windsurfer on the PWA World Tour circuit The Lancelin Ocean Classic starts tomorrow, running from 14 - 17 January in Lancelin, Western Australia. Event organisers have announced that effective immediately, the Windsurfing Waves competition will now offer a revised format as an exciting and innovative Windsurfing Expression Session - this is reflective of conditions more favourable to this format and offers an opportunity for athletes to display an impressive range of moves and experiment with new tricks. With the accompanying new judging criteria, world-class athletes will go head-to-head in showing their finest moves as they navigate a high afternoon tide with good swell and challenging winds expected - the Lancelin Ocean Class has drawn international attention with some of the highest-profile windsurfing talent in the world making their way down under, including: ? PWA's 2015 #8 Overall Waves, Robby Swift (UNITED KINGDOM) ? PWA's 2015 #1 ranking Wave Man, Philip K?ster (GERMANY) ? World #3, Jaeger Stone (AUSTRALIA) ? Australian #2, Ben Severne (AUSTRALIA) ? 2015 Winner of the Lancelin Ocean Classic Waves, Hendrix Stone (AUSTRALIA) ? PWA competitor, Ben Proffitt (UNITED KINGDOM) ? PWA competitor, Moritz Mauch (CANARY ISLANDS) Once the sporting events have concluded, the official awards ceremony of the Lancelin Ocean Classic is scheduled for 5:30pm Saturday in the Event Village, including the introduction of the new Peter Volwater Perpetual Award. The award will go to the sailor who has sailed in both the Windsurfing Expression Session and the 25km Windsurfing Marathon, with the combined best result for both events. A well-known athlete and friend to many competitors at the Lancelin Ocean Classic, the late Peter Volwater was a greatly celebrated figure in windsurfing with a pro career spanning over 20 years on the PWA Tour. Peter sadly passed away at the start of 2015, with reverberations around the world as fellow athletes mourned his loss. Peter was 40 years old. The Lancelin Ocean Classic is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia's Regional Events Program and is funded by Royalties for Regions.
