TOS to be included in world surfing reserve bid.
After an apparent win in the ‘Save our Broadwater’ campaign to prevent a cruise terminal being built on the gold coast, the popular surfing location TOS or ‘The Other Side’ on the very southern tip of Stradbroke Island is now being included in a proposal to protect some of the Gold Coasts most iconic beaches.
To be selected as a World Surfing Reserve, these sites must fulfil certain criteria including being a globally significant surf spot with a rich surf culture and history. Do you think TOS, Burleigh Heads and Snapper Rocks are significant surf spots?
You bet they are, with TOS being one of the most well known ‘secret spots’ in Australia. Big names have all remarked how unique the place is, just a short paddle over the passage at Southport, or an even shorter jetski ride. Working in a North Wester, as well as most of the conditions we get during winter, TOS is famous for it’s beachie barrels, sucking up the white gold coast sand and peeling both left and right off the sand banks.
Recently elected Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is backing the initiative, as well as pushing for the ‘Save Our Broadwater’ campaign as promised in her pre-election campaigning.
"I made it very clear that Labor was opposed to that development during the election campaign and we will stand by our commitment in relation to that," she said.
Give her and the Labour party a few months to sort things out down on the Gold Coast, and hopefully TOS will be saved as one of the worlds best beach breaks!
