Doing a 'Slater' - That trick nobody knows what to name...

What do you call that?

It's been a big couple of months in the surfing world. First the shark frenzy (by the media that is), then the backflip, and this week, it's this thing by Kelly Slater. Nobody knows what to call it. That's because nobody has ever seen it before. It's probably never been done before, and you can be sure that Kelly didn't intend to do it! What started out as a fairly average left hander during the Hurley Pro in Trestles this week ended in a 4.17 score. Hardly something to write home about for Kelly Slater, but when the social media world saw the trick that warranted the score, it quite literally exploded in a shower comments and outrage at WSL judges.

"It's really surprising the board ended up underneath me in the end." Admitted Kelly in his post-heat interview, after he'd lost to Mick Fanning. It was supposed to be an aerial of some type, but mid air, Kelly lost the surfboard from his feet and it went spinning off into the whitewash. Then, incredibly, he grabs it again, stands up, and continues to rip the wave apart (albeit with a little less vigour than one would normally expect). Now, like usual, grommies are kicking off their surfboards mid aerial and clutching madly in its general direction, trying to do a 'Slater'. Meanwhile, the worlds social media are still arguing about what it should be called, and how it should have been scored. Join the conversation here in the Seabreeze.com.au Surfing forums .
