Aussie Surfing Trio battle for the Womens World Title
Steph Gilmour is surfing her way to a sixth world title with initial performances in her heats showing that she’s still got what it takes. Scoring 14 points over rivals from Hawaii, Coco Ho and Paige Alms who scored a 5 and 6 respectively, Steph was literally surfing rings around them.
Sally Fitzgibbons put on a similar performance in her opening heat, after spending the week before competition training hard in local conditions on Maui. Knocking out local (and favourite) Alana Blanchard in the opening heat, she advances with the other two Aussie girls to the final rounds this week.
Showing the other two that she means business, was Tyler Wright. Surfing a near perfect heat with two 9 point rides, she gave the crowd at Honolua Bay a taste of what Aussie surfers can do, to spectacular effect!
"My brain is very clear when I’m surfing and I just think about creating lines.” Explains Wright. “I’m not very artistic on land but when it comes to being in the water I love being creative with it. That’s what I really enjoy and that’s when I do my best surfing.”
Four years since the last event in Maui, the competition has returned to Honalua Bay by popular demand from the surfers. Conditions in Maui are perfect according to Gilmour, but that’s not-to-say it’s easy for the girls!
“This world title race is at a boiling point and to have three of us so close is so incredibly exciting and nerve-racking. It has been an incredible year for all of us and to come here and finish up at a showdown at this perfect wave is a great moment for professional surfing.”
