The Merimbula Classic, formerly known as 'Mambo' is a culmination of kitesurfing, windsurfing and stand up paddling on one tiny beach on the south NSW coast. Of course it's on again this year (and will be for many to come), from the 26th to the 29th of November 2015.
Hosted by the Merimbula sailboard club, John Smyth and the guys have been watching the event transform over the last thirty five years into what it has become now, and that's mostly a stand up paddle event! Add into the mix great seabreezes, world famous after parties and the biggest range of demo boards, paddles and display equipment on show, to make the 2015 Merimbula classic the biggest Stand Up Paddle event in Australia.
This year marks the 35th running event, and Stan Squire has strayed from the norm a little with his much anticipated event poster! They're always incredibly detailed, and a little bit naughty, but that's why we love 'em! Instead of subtly including tiny references to the sports of windsurfing, kiteboarding and stand up paddling, this year the poster pays homage to Angus Young and Chrissie Amphlett, who are seen riding a Pegasus (flying horse). No paddles, no boards, not even a kite or a sail, but it's still super cool.
As you may have deduced from our mates Angus and Chrissie, this years theme is 'Back to School', and with the promise of an incredible band lined up for Saturday nights party, entrants are encouraged to dress up in their stubbies and polos, for four days of Merimbula mayhem!
Also on the cards is some downwind racing, surf comp and in the afternoons the clockwork Merimbula Seabreeze is sure to bring out all the wind junkies on kites and sails. It's going to be a huge year, so mark it down in your calendar and head down south for one of the best SUP events in the world.
