The WSL returns to Shark City in 2016

"With their heads held high, the WSL schedule was released, and sitting out the back with fleshy legs dangling, was Jeffreys Bay on July 6-17"
When the WSL announced they'd be releasing a new schedule for the 2016 season this week, many media outlets, and a lot of surfers wondered… Would they go back to J-Bay? Or would one of the most popular locations on the world tour fall victim to an 'almost' shark attack on live television?

With their heads held high, the schedule was released, and sitting out the back with fleshy legs dangling, was Jeffreys Bay on July 6th to the 17th, 2016. It almost didn't happen though, with a vote being put to a panel of surfers in France (which included Mick Fanning). Many opposed, saying they would not be competing if the event was held again in J-Bay. But with votes of confidence in the WSL as an organizing group, Fanning voted yay, and so did his mate Julian Wilson.

"Athlete safety is a top priority for the league," Kieren Perrow, the WSL Commissioner explained in a media statement after the announcement. "We have been in constant discussions with our athletes, event organizers and administrators regarding the future of this event (The J-Bay Pro). The WSL has made significant investments in the areas of surveillance and response for all current and future Tour spots, and we are currently working with a number of firms specializing in mitigation technology that focus on both athlete safety and the safety of the marine environment."

What he's talking about there, this 'mitigation technology'; is shark repellent technology. Dangling electrodes, magnetic anklets, zebra striped boards and wetsuits. Maybe they'll mandate the use of all three for professional surfers, maybe they'll pick one flagship device that the pro's will be sporting. We'll know in March, when the 2016 World Surfing League heads right here to the Gold Coast, for the Quiksilver Pro on March 10-21st 2016.
