Sailing to Antarctica, and bringing it home to share
If you ask a sailor the question, most would tell you of one place they'd love to sail one day. It's probably not Antarctica. In 2014, the 73 year old Lars Ljung set sail from his home in Sweden, to embark on a three year journey around the world. Eight months later, his son joined him on the leg which took them from Cape Horn, down south to Antarctica, where they shot some award winning footage from a drone. The S/Y Arianna is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 47, built in the early 90's and perfect for the mission. It's small enough to be sailed solo, large enough to handle a few visitors and sturdy enough to handle all (well, almost all) that the ocean can throw at it. What makes the footage so good however, is not the boat. Sure, it's a nice Jeanneau, but those are everywhere. It's the scenery. The breathtaking icebergs and glaciers, the icy blue water and the whales - oh yes the whales! Shot from the air by a DJI Phantom 2, the slowly sweeping drone footage is the perfect way to look around. Have a look for yourself in the video below, and maybe Antarctica might move up a few spots on the 'list of places' you'd like to sail in your lifetime...
