Information session on Brighton beach renourishment
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is inviting people to attend a community information session on Monday April 13 to discuss planned renourishment works at Brighton beach.
Regional Director Port Phillip Kelly Crosthwaite said: “The beach, at the end of New Street and South Road, has depleted over time and needs renourishment to protect the foreshore and widen the beach.”
“In addition to the sand, two new rock groynes will help stabilise and keep sand in this rocky area.”
“DELWP is working with Bayside Council and a coastal engineer and will hold a community information session so people can meet the project team and discuss details of the renourishment one-on-one.”
“The sand for the renourishment will be dredged from sandbars located offshore from the beach area.”
“Beaches are a naturally dynamic environment and coastal erosion is a process impacting beaches around the world.”
“Renourishment is one of the most effective methods we have of protecting beaches in Port Phillip Bay.”
“Renourishments not only provide a storm buffer for coastal infrastructure but help to create wider, sandy beaches for the community to enjoy.”
The community workshop will be held on Monday 13 April at Council’s Sandringham office in the Highett room at 76 Royal Avenue between 6pm and 7pm.
If anyone is unable to attend the meeting but would still like to provide feedback or receive project updates, they can call DELWP on (03) 9637 9303 or email sally.patterson@delwp.vic.gov.au
Depending on weather conditions, the renourishment works are planned to commence in late May 2015 and should take about eight weeks to complete.
