Balmoral Sailing Club turns 70 this year - be a part of our
On the 24th July 1945 Balmoral 12ft Sailing Club, later to become Balmoral Sailing Club (BSC), was formed. Foundation member, Bob Oatley AO BEM said, “As teenagers, my great friend Bill Buckle and I joined
Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Club but it was pretty obvious that they didn’t want to encourage our division so a few of us got together to consider our options; the upshot being that we decided to start our own club.”
Bob continued, “The first major thing we had to do was to acquire the beachfront land for the clubhouse. The parents of several of the founding members then helped us lay a large concrete slab and, in 1947, we
erected the first clubhouse – a second-hand Nissen Hut that we bought from Army Disposals for 92 pounds.” The hut was finally demolished in 1975 and replaced by the current clubhouse.
According to Commodore, Campbell Mackay, “Balmoral Sailing Club has been the launching place for sailors who have gone on to become Australian and World titleholders, Olympic competitors and ocean-racing champions (most notably, Bob Oatley of Wild Oats fame) but BSC is also the home of many recreational sailors who love nothing more than just getting out on the water and mixing with a great bunch of friendly people.”
The official 70th Celebrations will be held at the Club on Sunday 18th October 2015 commencing at 12 noon. BSC would like to make contact with anyone who has been involved with the Club, in any way over the past 70 years. Even if you can’t attend our get-together we’d love you to contact us and share your memories of your time at the Club. Please contact: Michael Batty by email: 70thCelebrations@balmoralsc.com.au or
