Thousands of boats - one - SAIL 2015
Just one bend in the canal, there's plenty more, just as packed!
In August this year, thousands of yachties flocked to the North Sea Canal to take part in the Port of Amsterdam's SAIL 2015 event. It was absolutely spectacular.
Not just from the water, but from the air, where this time lapsed drone footage captures the madness of it all! Boats by the hundred, sometimes ten abreast navigate down the passage. Then someone decides to turn a container ship around, cut across the channel. Boats go everywhere, then resume as if nothing happened. Tall ships are anchored, rotated on the spot then pushed expertly onto the wharf by tugs, the speedboats just pass by. Like poetry in motion, the professional navigators and staff show that the Netherlands knows how to make it happen.
That's exactly what the SAIL event is all about, showing off what the Netherlands has to offer the maritime industry:
"SAIL is a leading nautical brand inspired by our legendary history of seafaring." Says the company in their mission statement for the next 10 years. "A brand that has a universal story to tell, recognised way beyond the wharves of Amsterdam. SAIL has export value. The adventurers of the past are the heroes of the future. SAIL is ready to sail around the world."
