Insane Tinnie Racing on the Murray River
They call it the Dinghy Derby, and it happens in South Australia on the Murray. Over 100 teams entered this year (the thirty seventh year) with their 30hp tinnies to race each other over 100km around the tightest corners and gnarliest passages in the river. The winner, they got a $6 trophy and some cheap champagne sprayed in their face, but nobody minded. The racers are there to race.
Two guys sit in each boat, one drives, the other is a 'swinger'. Their job is to jump from the front to the back of the boat to change the weight distribution. If they get far enough out the front, the tail swings out and allows the boat to drift around the corners. If they get right up the back, the boats quite literally fly, with only the motor in the water. With their helmets mere centimeters from the river bank, those guys are quite literally sticking their neck out in the name of speed.
It looks as crazy as it sounds, and if you're thinking that Red Bull need to jump on board as a sponsor, then you're right. They kicked things up a notch in 2017 and promise that next year, the Red Bull Dinghy Derby is going to be huge.
