The rise and rise of the Internet was vividly demonstrated yesterday afternoon when 3,000 sailors arrived at Royal Geelong Yacht Club, from the 34 nautical mile Festival of Sail passage race from Geelong and proceeded it seems to all begin to send images from the race back to their families on their smartphones, via the Internet.

The local mobile cells went into total meltdown. A taste of things to come, much easier to sit on the boat, send mid-race photos to the family, having a quiet ale and have someone read the results out to the crew straight off the web. With Internet tablets down to less than $200 now, there will be more and more of that in the future.

The first crew online was from Tim Pepperell's trimaran Bare Essentials, three minutes later it was the crew of Rob Hanna's new TP52 Shogun V.

Blue skies and light northerlies on Corio Bay, with more breeze expected this afternoon. A kindly breeze for the cruisers this morning and now the Seabreeze is coming in with grunt for the IRC and sports boat fleet later this afternoon. Good conditions for the Melges 24s and S80 Nationals, part of this year's event.
