WA to install more 'fishing debris bins'.

After collecting more than 8.7km of fishing line, 1743 fishing hooks and sinkers, 254 lure packets and 1508 bait bags in specialised bins around Perth, the WA Department of Fisheries is planning to spend another $20,000 on expanding the scheme.

Placed in popular fishing locations on the Swan and Canning Rivers, these bins were marked for fishing related waste only. The 25 bins were initially installed as a trial in 2014, but with such a successful outcome, they will now remain in place along with another 20 which will be installed during 2015. The $20,000 budget for the initiative also includes a public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of discarding fishing tackle and the location of the bins.

Emptied fortnightly, the bins are made from 100% recycled plastic. Keep an eye out for them next time you're near the river, and don't forget to use them!
