NSW restrictions for bass, estuary perch and trout

 Key points:
  • zero bag limit for bass or estuary perch in place from June 1 to August 31 - except for impoundments / dams
  • no trout to be fished for from midnight June 8 to October 3 - except for lakes and dams

The New South Wales DPI has recently issued reminders to all anglers that June marks the month that some of NSW' great recreational fishing species enter a closed season.

From June 1 to August 31 a zero bag limit of Australian bass and estuary perch caught in rivers and estuaries has been put in place, for impoundments and dams such as the Glennies Creek Dam or the Toonumbar Dam the daily bag limit of two applies.

From midnight June 8 to October 3 fishing for brown, rainbow and brook trout from streams and rivers is prohibited, but all trout dams and lakes such as Lake Jindabyne, Oberon Dam or Thompson's Creek Dam remain open for fishing throughout the winter.

The migration and spawning of these species is the primary reason for these closures being put in place. Bass and estuary perch start schooling in areas with correct salinity levels for spawning to take place while trout species begin their annual spawning run making them vulnerable targets at a time when, for the future of the species, they are best left unharrassed.
