More Girls Go Fishing in South Australia

"The largest group of recreational anglers in SA are kids, aged between 5 and 14. With the largest group increase being in girls!"
With one in six people from South Australia fishing recreationally at least once a year, anglers number 277,000 people across the state, and that group is growing! Revealed by results from the SA Recreational Fishing Survey this week, the pastime of fishing has grown 14% since 2008, with the largest category being young people between the ages of five and fourteen years old.

"It's great to see so many young South Australians getting out on the water with their families and developing a healthy respect for our fisheries." Told SA fisheries Minister Leon Bignell, "The greatest increase in participation was five to 14 year-old girls, which almost doubled from 14.8 per cent to 26.2 per cent since 2007/08."

-Overall, recreational fishing participation in SA has increased 14% in 7 years. -The largest group of recreational anglers in SA are kids, aged between 5 and 14. -Recreational Fishing remains a vital source of tourism in coastal regions around SA. -Fishing from boats and kayaks, is more popular than fishing from beaches or jetties! -In 2013-14, South Australian anglers spent 965,000 days fishing. -The average angler spends 5.9 days fishing each year. -Spencer Gulf is the most popular fishing location in the state, followed by Kangaroo Island. -The most popular species of fish caught were King George Whiting, Blue Swimmer Crabs and then Tommy Ruff.
